“First Drug Czar Targeted Illegal Narcotics in Racing,” my longform piece about an early attempt by the federal government to rein in illegal drugs on the backstretch almost a century ago, took first place in the Equine Magazine Article: Horse Racing category at this year’s EQUUS Film & Arts Fest. The announcement of the award came on November 21, 2020, during a Zoom ceremony for winning authors, filmmakers, artists, bloggers, podcasters, and other creative folks. Thanks to Blood-Horse magazine for finding a place for a 7,000-word article and to festival founder Lisa Diersen, co-organizer Diana De Rosa, and the rest of the EQUUS herd!
