His Highness Prince Karin Aga Khan IV recorded his fifth victory in the Epson Derby earlier this month when homebred Harzand held off a charge from US Army Ranger. The victory marked the most recent highlight in a long history of success in the classic for the current Aga Khan and for his grandfather.
Shergar, the first Derby winner for the current Aga Khan, was stolen from Ballymany Farm in County Kildare on the eve of the 1983 breeding season. Ranson was demanded but never paid, and the horse never was recovered. Racing’s most famous cold case, the theft of Shergar was the subject of my longform article, Taking Shergar, published at www.bloodhorse on February 8, the 33rd anniversary of the day the stallion went missing.
